Summary:
The extended Police Station 43 in Hamburg combines an existing brick building from the 1980s with a striking new extension. A defining feature is the large 1,100-square-metre aluminium façade made from PREFA extruded profiles, which are anodised in colour C33 ‘Medium Bronze’. The architectural office Pflügelbauer & Scheffczyk utilised the textured surface, the gentle curvature and the iridescent anodised colours to visibly interlink security, functionality, sustainability and architectural precision.
Bronze as a landmark
Even as you approach the south-east of Hamburg, Police Station 43 makes a striking impression. Towering above the elongated brick building dating from the 1980s stands the extension designed by Pflügelbauer & Scheffczyk. The dark bronze-coloured anodised aluminium façade lends the structure depth, texture and presence. Depending on the light, it appears at times calm, at times vibrant – and makes the police station a clear landmark in the cityscape.
A complex task, a clear structure
The extension was more than just an increase in floor space. Across a gross floor area of around 4,650 square metres, regulatory requirements, security standards, building services and modern working environments all had to be integrated. For a police station, this means: secure access control points, detention cells, equipment areas, ventilation and technical systems – but also offices, sports facilities and quiet areas to support 24-hour operations.
“The road to completion was long and intensive,” recalls architect Andreas Pflügelbauer. That is precisely why a design was needed that did not simply add elements together, but organised them.
Extending existing buildings
The new building stands out clearly from the low-rise existing structure. A glass joint marks the transition. The vertical structure of the brick building meets the horizontal coils of the extension – a deliberate contrast that connects the two structures rather than pitting them against one another.
On the courtyard side, the characteristic curve of the new building is evident. It is not merely a design feature, but also organises the internal space: short distances, good natural light and a modern working environment. On the roof, around 1,000 square metres of green space and a solar thermal system make a further contribution to sustainability.
A material with depth and character
For the expansive façade area, the architects sought a material that would precisely complement the curved structure whilst also creating design depth. Following extensive sampling, the choice fell on the PREFA extruded profile with an anodised surface.
Anodised aluminium surfaces are created through an electrochemical process in which the material’s oxide layer is reinforced in a controlled manner. This increases resistance to corrosion, wear and weathering. At the same time, it produces subtle colour nuances that may vary slightly from batch to batch – influenced by temperature, duration, humidity and the age of the electroplating bath. It was precisely this variation that was desired: the façade was not intended to appear smooth and uniform, but rather vibrant.
1,100 square metres of precision work
The façade was constructed by Kohlmeyer Fassadenbau under the project management of Walter Kohlmeyer. Around 1,100 square metres of façade area were clad with bronze-anodised PREFA extruded profiles. The two-millimetre-thick aluminium profiles were arranged in a row as 20-centimetre-wide elements and fitted with an overlap, so that the fastenings remain concealed.
The large curve of the façade proved particularly challenging. Mounting profiles had to be bent to the correct radius, whilst window lintels and sills had to be precisely calculated and prefabricated as aluminium sleeves. On site, the sub-structure framework was levelled using laser technology to ensure that the façade plane lies evenly in front of the masonry.
Like hatching in the light
The result is a uniform yet never monotonous aluminium façade. Its textured surface catches the light, creates depth and is reminiscent of the hatching in a hand-drawn architectural sketch. In this way, a functional police station becomes an architectural statement: meticulously planned, skilfully executed and robust enough to give the existing building a new role in the cityscape.
