Canteen in Stuttgart: Reference objects

This is what happens when children get to design their own school canteen – the architects from the Stuttgart-based firm hammeskrause architekten let the canteen’s users, the children, design their canteen themselves. The result was a striking and colourful building that certainly catches the eye.

The canteen building is a winner thanks to its bright and colourful façade. The visible concrete gable looks out over the street, and the roof has no gutter. The water drains off straight down the façade. The colourful outer shell is made from 44 x 44 rhomboid roof and façade tiles in the special colours of broom yellow, carmine red, mint green and pastel turquoise.

The enthusiastic interest of the schoolchildren was also unusual. ‘Every breaktime, ten to fifteen children came and stood around, watching us work,’ explains Campanale. As a result, the children from the two neighbouring schools were not only involved in the design of the project, they also got to see it progress at every stage. The laying of the first rhomboid tile was also a joint effort.
