Rötzergasse School and Residential Building: Reference objects
Introduction
Redensification also means sometimes thinking beyond property boundaries. In Rötzergasse in Vienna, a residential building was extended to include an entire Primary School – and this within an already dense block perimeter structure.
Although the building is not listed, the façade of the structure, originally built in 1895, was to be preserved as faithfully as possible to the original. Rötzergasse is situated in a conservation area where the characteristic urban and street scene must be preserved.
The architects opted for PREFA rhomboid façade tiles 29 × 29 for the roof and the courtyard façade. The rhomboid tiles represent a modern interpretation of the traditional roof tiles found on neighbouring buildings. The window profiles, cladding and balustrades were also colour-coordinated to match the bronze-coloured PREFA rhomboid tiles.
A key feature of the project is the numerous transitions and building edges. The PREFA rhomboid tiles were carefully laid over roof edges and into the loggias on the courtyard side. The eaves presented a further challenge, as they had to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. They were designed so that the laying pattern of the rhomboid tiles is not interrupted despite the small roof overhang, and efficient ventilation of the roof and façade via the eaves detail is ensured.
